Friendly reminder if Toph can see the whole world she could see Lin lose her bending.
Can I just say something? Okay. In the first episode of Book 3, we have a Mako that is freaking living under a desk. At that point it was obvious he was unhappy, but did he admit it? Nope. Mako had too much pride to admit that he was unhappy with how his life was going. As I mentioned before, in the past, Mako refused to let himself carry around any emotional baggage- in fact he generally shied away from any emotion at all (except certain scenes with Korra). He just chose stick it out without letting anyone help him, regardless of how miserable he was because he was scared of showing weakness, or dependency. When Bolin and Korra both ask him to come with them in “Rebirth” he originally says no because he feels awkward. But his excuse? He has a job. He has a “life” in Republic City. At that point, he was willing to be unhappy before admitting that he could stand being without his friend, or without Korra.
And in “The Coronation” we truly saw a Mako that was unhappy with the direction his life is going. If this would have been last season, I truly believe Mako would have played his emotions off. I believe he would have told Bolin that he had a great life. I believe he would’ve tried to make his job sound like it was something that he felt was really important. But he’s not happy.
I feel like this is huge character development for Mako. I think that he’s thinking about how unhappy he truly is and I feel like he’s accrediting that to not having Korra around. Sure, he’s got the fancy job. He’s got a nice life and pretty much whatever he needs. But he doesn’t have Korra. He doesn’t have that life that’s full of action and energy when he’s not around her and I honestly think he misses it. For him to basically admit to Bolin that he was unhappy, and then for Bolin to throw back at him, to me, foreshadows that we’re going to get a scene where Mako tells Korra just how unhappy he was without her these past few years. He’s going to tell her that he needs her and that he can’t stand how his life is without her. At his strongest emotionally, he told her that. He told her he couldn’t imagine his life without her in it. He struggled with letting himself believe in that in Book 3 due to all of awkwardness, but he fully believes it now. Korra’s going to reunite with everyone and feel as if they’ve all moved on and grown up. But she’ll realize that Mako has been just as unhappy. He’s going to tell her that she’s needed, and honestly? That’s exactly what she needs to hear right now.
